It has been a quiet few years for completely original, non-sequel stories from Walt Disney Animation Studios. However, the studio has broken that drought by releasing the first teaser trailer for its 65th animated feature film, Hexed.

Scheduled to hit cinemas on 25 November 2026, the project looks like a deliberate step away from standard fairy tale tropes. Instead, we are getting a comedy-forward, non-musical fantasy adventure that trades sugar-coated sentimentality for what the creators describe as “wild, unhinged magic”.

The narrative follows Billie, an impulsive and unconventional teenager who has always felt completely out of place in her mundane suburban life. Her everyday struggles take a drastic turn when her dormant magical abilities suddenly trigger, causing her classroom to levitate and naturally getting her expelled from school.

Before she can process her new reality, Billie is sucked through her bedroom and propelled out of suburbia into Hexe, a hidden, chaotic realm populated entirely by witches.

She is not embarking on this journey alone, however. Billie is joined by her cautious, Type-A mother, Alice, who gets reluctantly dragged along for the ride. Together, the mother-daughter duo must navigate this bizarre new world while uncovering deep family mysteries that threaten to alter the magical world forever.

A Great Voice Cast of Humans and Household Objects

Disney has assembled an impressive lineup of talent to bring these characters to life. Hailee Steinfeld lends her voice to Billie, delivering a relatable, grounded take on teenage angst. Her cautious mother, Alice, is voiced by Rashida Jones.

In true Disney fashion, the magical realm is filled with enchanted, talking objects. This time around, they are voiced by two British comedy veterans. Seven-time Emmy winner Tracey Ullman voices Ms. Quill, an enchanted, fast-talking feather quill pen. She is joined by Stephen Fry, who lends his distinctively sophisticated tones to Elias Quire, a living, magical journal.

A Hidden World of Belonging

The creative team behind Hexed features strong credentials from recent Disney hits. The film is helmed by directors Fawn Veerasunthorn (Head of Story on Raya and the Last Dragon) and Jason Hand (Head of Story on Encanto), alongside co-director Josie Trinidad (Zootopia+). Academy Award winners Roy Conli and Yvett Merino are handling production duties.

With its blend of modern family dynamics, sharp comedy, and a break from traditional musical formats, Hexed looks to be a refreshing addition to the Disney library when it lands in cinemas this November.
