Queensland’s Attorney-General is appealing against the sentences given to four teenagers who attacked a Sunshine Coast store owner last year.
Dicky Beach IGA owner Shane Kensett was kicked and punched after being beaten to the ground by the group of teens aged 14 to 17 last August.
Police charged six of them.
The Maroochydore Children’s Court handed down four sentences, two were given six-month suspended sentences while the other two were given 18 months’ probation and 60 hours of community service.
In a statement, Acting Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said he lodged an appeal on all four of the sentences because “I consider them to be manifestly inadequate and, in my view, do not reflect the seriousness of the offending, the impact on the victim, or meet community expectations.”
He said the State Government is committed to restoring accountability to Queensland’s justice system, ensuring offenders are met with serious consequences, and victims are put first.
“My thoughts are with the victim and his family,” Mr Bleijie said.
