Tropical Cyclone Alfred, a Category 1 system, is currently tracking over Moreton Bay and is forecast to make landfall early this morning near Bribie Island, between Maroochydore and Brisbane. Once Alfred reaches the mainland, it is expected to weaken below tropical cyclone strength as it moves further inland throughout the day.
Heavy rainfall is forecast to persist across southeast Queensland and northeast New South Wales throughout the weekend. Intense downpours, potentially resulting in dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding, are expected in coastal and nearby inland areas of southeast Queensland as Tropical Cyclone Alfred weakens and moves inland today. Separate Severe Weather Warnings, Flood Watches, and Flood Warnings remain in effect for these regions. Stay alert and prepared.
Abnormally high tides are expected to continue, causing minor flooding in low-lying coastal areas between Maroochydore and Ballina, particularly during this morning’s high tide. Damaging surf, likely to cause significant beach erosion, is anticipated along open beaches from Noosa to Ballina and further south along the New South Wales coastline. Separate Coastal Hazard and Hazardous Surf warnings remain in effect for the southeast Queensland and New South Wales coasts.
Gales with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS to 120 kilometres per hour between Maroochydore and Southport, are expected persist for next several hours as Alfred makes landfall over mainland. Damaging wind gusts are expected to ease as Alfred moves inland and weakens below tropical cyclone strength during the morning.
Although, a weakened Alfred will continue to move inland during the day, there is a chance that DAMAGING WIND GUSTS may occur over elevated terrain. A separate Severe Weather Warning is current for this.
