Two men charged with murder over alleged Gympie assault

Two men have been charged with murder over the death of a 41-year-old man who was allegedly assaulted outside a Gympie hotel on Sunday morning.

Police allege around 2am on Sunday, the Lagoon Pocket man was punched outside the Queenslander Hotel and fell hitting his head on the road.

It is alleged the man continued to be assaulted while he was on the ground.

Members of the public gave the man first aid until emergency services arrived in Mary Street.

The 41-year-old man was flown to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a critical condition but died from his injuries yesterday.

Two men aged 24 and 21, both from Gympie were initially charged with grievous bodily harm but the charge was upgraded to murder in the Gympie Magistrates Court yesterday.

Detective Inspector Wade Lee said the two accused knew the dead man and allege an argument started over a debt.

Inspector Lee is calling on anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam or CCTV footage to contact them.

Both men have been remanded in custody to reappear in Gympie Magistrates Court at a later date
