The Sunshine Coast-based LifeFlight aeromedical crew has helped rescue a stranded sailor off North Stradbroke Island.

The rescue helicopter was tasked yesterday morning to search for the man after he set off a distress alarm.

He was found sitting on top of his overturned boat approximately 3.5 nautical miles offshore.

A fisherman nearby responded to a request for help from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and helped the man onto his boat before taking him to shore.

Locals then drove the man to the LifeFlight helicopter, which had landed in a nearby grassy area.

The man, aged in his 50s, was in good spirits and did not need medical transport after being assessed by the Queensland Ambulance Service flight paramedic.

Police helped the patient off the island to get back home.
