Investigations underway after spate of fires at housing estate worksites in Gympie

Police are investigating after several break and enter, wilful damage and arson offences that occurred at housing estate worksites in Southside, Gympie earlier this week.

Initial investigations indicate around 10pm on Sunday (February 5), officers were called to reports of a portable toilet and a power box on fire at a house worksite on Eagle Hawk Drive, Southside.

Upon arrival, officers located the two items alight, as well as multiple houses under construction which had sustained significant damage.

Emergency services were able to put out both fires shortly after their arrival.

Several hours later during the early hours of Monday (February 6), officers were called to reports of a building fire on Excalibur Crescent, Southside.

Upon arrival, officers located further houses that were being built that had been significantly damaged, with a fire coming from one of the structures.

Emergency services were again able to put out the fire a short time later.

Damage to these houses under construction included damage to doors, damaged windows, grout and plaster thrown throughout, concrete thrown at walls causing damage, a stone benchtop has been removed from a bench and smashed, damage to cabinets, paint poured throughout rooms and multiple uninstalled windows smashed.

Investigators are appealing for anyone who may have CCTV, dashcam vision or noticed anything suspicious between 9.30pm on Sunday to 5am on Monday in the vicinity of Excalibur Crescent, Eagle Hawk Drive or nearby streets to come forward.

Investigations are ongoing.
