There have been four very small aftershocks since a 5.6 magnitude earthquake rattled large parts of Queensland recently, according to Geoscience Australia, and new kits are being installed to get more accurate information.

The tremor hit near Kilkivan on Saturday morning but more than 24,000 people felt the earth move across Queensland and New South Wales.

Geoscience Australia Seismologist Dr Michelle Salmon said seismic rapid deployment kits will be installed around the Sunshine Coast region this week to collect data.

“These aftershock kits will help us to locate the little aftershocks that are happening … we’ll be able to publish them on our site,” she said.

“We have had four very small aftershocks so far.”

Dr Salmon said they should also provide detail about the locations of any activity.

“We’ll also get information about ground shaking locally.”
