Police have charged a 38 year-old man with eight counts of attempted murder after he allegedly ploughed into a group of people in Maroochydore on Saturday night.
It’s alleged the foreign national, who is here on a work visa, had a minor altercation with a group of men crossing Aerodrome Road near Fourth Avenue around 11.55pm on Saturday.
Detective Acting Inspector Peter Hocken said the man got out of his car and challenged the men at the crossing.
Inspector Hocken said the man then deliberately drove his Toyota Yaris onto the footpath, critically injuring a 24 year-old woman from Sydney.
The woman was on the coast for a surprise family visit and her parents have flown to Brisbane to be with her in hospital.
Three other pedestrians, including two 18-year-old men and a 19-year-old man, were transported Sunshine Coast University Hospital, with non-life-threatening injuries and have since been released.
The man fled the scene in his car but was found a short time later at his home in Alexandra Headland.
Inspector Hocken said the incident isn’t terror related.
The man is due to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court today.
