Dozens fined in hinterland road safety crackdown

Dozens of people have been nabbed doing the wrong thing on Sunshine Coast hinterland roads, during a two-day police operation. 

Operation Hills saw Sunshine Coast Highway Patrol police perform a series of traffic enforcement patrols, aimed at making local roads safer at the weekend (August 20 to 21).

It resulted in 38 people dealt with for 53 offences.

Police will allege four men on motorcycles were detected riding more than 30km/h over the limit in an 80 km/h speed zone.

Two of the riders allegedly evaded police by driving away in a dangerous manner and were later located by officers.

Police say a 30-year-old man was recorded travelling more than double the speed limit; doing 160km/h in an 80km/h zone, travelling to the incorrect side of the road and almost colliding with a police motorcycle travelling in the opposite direction.

The Mapleton man was issued with three infringements for exceed speed limit by more than 20km/h ($646.00 and four demerit points), exceed speed limit by more than 30km/h, and fail to attach number plate in a way that complies.

He was also charged with one count each of dangerous operation with excessive speed and evade police.

The rider is due to appear at Caloundra Magistrates Court September 20, and his motorcycle has been impounded for 90 days.

A 49-year-old Beerwah man and a 45-year-old Marcoola man were also fined $1,078.00 and six demerit points for exceeding the speed limit by more than 30km/h and charged with contravening a direction. 

A fourth man, a 32-year-old from Kings Beach, was also issued with infringements for exceeding the speed limit by more than 30km/h, failing to stop for prescribed purpose ($862.00), failing to attach number plate in a way that complies ($460.00) and driving a defective vehicle. 

He was also charged with one count each of dangerous operation with excessive speed and evade police, while his motorcycle has been impounded for 90 days.  

All three men are due to face court next month.
