Copper wire thieves, disguised as tradies, are targeting construction sites on the Sunshine Coast.

Police say there has been a spate of thefts, with a ‘phenomenal amount’ of copper wire stolen.

Acting Sergeant Rebecca McMeniman says there were three occurrences last weekend resulting in tens of thousands of dollars worth of wire being taken.

Sites at Eumundi, the Maroochydore off-ramp and Bells Creek Arterial Road in the new Nirimba estate are among the recent targets.

Acting Sergeant McMeniman says the thieves dress to look like workers, and often strike on days off.

“On the weekends there’s not usually workers at these construction sites.

“They will be wearing hi-vis clothing and driving construction vehicles like utilities.”

She’s urging locals to report any suspicious activity.

“If anybody sees somebody on the side of the road loading items, don’t think it’s going to be a hindrance to call police,” she says.

Overall, Acting Sergeant McMeniman says there has easily been more than a hundred thefts recorded through-out the year, across the Moreton and Sunshine Coast Districts.
