A girl has died after being bitten by a shark while swimming at Bribie Island.
The 17-year-old was swimming off Woorim Beach yesterday afternoon when the shark bit her upper arm and body.
It is the second fatal shark attack attack in Queensland in just over a month.
In December, school chaplain Luke Walford was killed at Humpy Island off the coast of Yeppoon.
Surf Lifesaving Queensland CEO Dave Whimpey said “the girl and her family have been a cherished part of the surf lifesaving community for a long time and our hearts are broken.”
“Yesterday, we experienced an unthinkable tragedy with the loss of one of our own,” he said.
“She and Surf lifesaving is built on family and community and as we grieve, we also come together in strength.
“The red and yellow family will stand side by side, supporting Bribie Island SLSC and the broader Surf Life Saving Queensland community in any way we can while continuing our priority to save lives and keep our beaches safe,” Mr Whimpey said.
