Most people think window cleaning is a routine task, but for a dedicated group of professionals, it has become a high-speed international sport. Each year, competitors from around the globe travel to London to test their skills in the World Window Cleaning World Cup, an event focused on speed, precision and spotless results.
The competition challenges entrants to clean three identical windows as quickly and thoroughly as possible using a standard set of tools. Contestants are supplied with a squeegee, applicator, detergent solution, bucket and scrim cloth, creating an even playing field where technique is everything.

One of the event’s most famous names is 71-year-old British cleaner Terry Burrows, widely regarded as a legend within the industry. Burrows set a world record in 2009 by cleaning three windows in just 9.14 seconds, a benchmark that reportedly remains unbeaten.
Competitors use sweeping S-shaped movements across the glass before checking for streaks and imperfections. Once satisfied, they stop the clock, but raw speed alone won’t secure victory. Judges carefully inspect each window, and penalties are added for drips, lines and visible streaks.
Even minor blemishes can prove costly. Small imperfections attract time penalties, while larger streaks result in even bigger deductions. The judging system means contestants must strike a delicate balance between moving fast and delivering a genuinely clean finish.
While the winner takes home a £1,000 cash prize, the competition’s prestige appears to matter just as much. For participants, earning the title of world champion offers serious bragging rights in an industry many people rarely associate with elite competition.
