A bottle of award-winning gin, a Mooloolaba Surf Club menu, a “Seven Years to Go” Olympic badge, and heartfelt letters to the future – these are just some of the treasures now sealed inside a time capsule on the Sunshine Coast, that won’t be opened until 2050.

Mayor Rosanna Natoli joined former Maroochy Shire Council Mayor Don Culley and local business identity Graeme Juniper at Mooloolaba Esplanade this week, to lock away a snapshot of life in 2025.

The capsule also includes a copy of My Weekly Preview, a Sunshine Coast Daily edition, a 5-cent coin, and even a Paris 2024 Olympic hand waver.

The capsule was originally buried in the year 2000 and unearthed earlier this year, revealing a world where a T-bone steak cost $3.95, beachfront homes were $219,000, and Friday nights meant racing to the video store for Notting Hill.

Mayor Natoli says the next 25 years will be transformative for the region.

“The Sunshine Coast isn’t just a place – it’s a feeling. That’s our true legacy for the future, creating a region and community where everyone feels seen, supported and inspired to contribute,” she said.

She hopes to see a thriving, connected community with world-class transport, pristine beaches, lush hinterland escapes, and a buzzing Maroochydore City Centre.

The capsule will now stay sealed until 2050. When it’s opened, future locals will discover what mattered most in 2025; from Olympic dreams to local flavours and everything in between.
